trace…
10am – 10:25 – left to Palo Alto for my appointment. silly me misses the entrance and gets a little lost finding the building, adding approximately 10 minutes to travel time
10:30 – finished filling out questionaire and waiting for the nurse to call me in…
…
10:55 – 10 minutes past my scheduled appointment, i walk up to the receptionist and reconfirm my time
me: Hi, i have an appointment at 10:45?
receptionist: with who?
me: Dr. King
receptionist: he’s about 45 minutes behind
me: *raise eyebrow*.. oki
receptionist: there are 3 patients in front of you
me: *blank face* … oOoK
*and i walk back to sit down*
11:05am – nurse calls my last name and another patient to come to the back. i sit in a back room to the right
11:10am – nurse comes back in and asks a few questions like, what happened? which knee is it? when did this happen? then he leaves and says the doctor will be right with me
…
…
… 20 minutes later
…
11:30am – someone enters and it’s not the doc. it’s his assistant (note: i only know her by assistant, no introduction, no name).
11:31am – after a pull on my leg and a bit of rubbing around my right knee, she says, “you need an MRI”
me: OK, can we get it done today?
assistant: depends, who’s your insurance?
me: Blue Cross PPO
assistant: great, yea, we can get it in today
11:32am – she leaves to get the MRI appointment scheduled…
11:35am – she comes back
assistant: OK, you’re scheduled for an MRI in Menlo Park at 12:45
me: oki… *damn that was fast*
assistant: we’ll get the results back and find out if you need orthoscopic surgery or not. The doctor will be in to see you to confirm
me: *blank face* oki…
…
…
waiting
…
11:50 – finally, i see the doctor i was scheduled for. lay down and he puts some pressure around my knee
doc: you need an MRI
me: oki…
doc: there’s swelling in the knee, which means you have an injury – it’s either there’s abrasion on the cartiledge, which doesn’t necessarily require surgery, or you have a torn meniscus…and you’ll need surgery for that
me: oki…
at the same time he takes a knee model and gives me a 15 second lesson in knee mechanics, informing me that the meniscus is what cushions and because there is no blood supply, it cannot heal itself.
couple minutes later…
11:52 – doc tells me to change back in go outside and make a right. that’s it? geez! i was scheduled for 10:45… pretty much waited around for an hour and see the doc for 2 minutes – oh how wonderful.
I walk out and a lady schedules me for my follow up to go over the MRI results. We aim for next Tuesday, and as she puts me in for a time, i notice a small popup warning on her screen saying “possible overbooking!” – m*therf*ckers.
i’m starting to assume that overbookings happen quite often and outrageous wait times are the norm with popular, high demand docs and large clinics. i didn’t realize the luxury i had at my first doctor visit, where i waited 5 minutes and spent 25 minutes with the doc going over my injury. perhaps the first doc isn’t in his field so much for the money, but to actually honor the hippocratic oath and treat patients with time and care. i personally felt that the pamf clinic is a money making machine, ordering MRIs for every patient and getting fees from every person they can squeeze quickly in a day…
not a good experience.
walked into the office kitchen this morning and felt a sudden snap in my knee – “oh shit!”, i shout…
gonna see Dr. King in Palo Alto soon… arGgh!
soOo…since my knee has been feeling 10x better than last week, i’ve been wandering and walking around without giving my knee too much rest – big mistake. i feel the swelling come back, especially right above the knee.
ohmy…swelling go away!
i heard this a few weeks ago on On-Demand… re-found it again and it’s on my top playlists @ the moment.
it’ll all get better in time (leona lewis), yes-sir-eee….
‘Thought I couldn’t live without you
It’s gonna hurt when it heals too
It’ll all get better in time
And even though I really love you
I’m gonna smile cause I deserve to
It’ll all get better in time
I couldn’t turn on the TV
Without something there to remind me
Was it all that easy
To just put aside your feelings’
Since there’s no more you and me
It’s time I let you go
So I can be free
And live my life how it should be
No matter how hard it is I’ll be fine without you
Yes I will’
apologize… one republic
loved this jam when hearing it on the radio down in San Diego last year
tuesday has come and is almost gone – all day today i couldn’t believe it was ONLY Tuesday. i woke up and believed it was Thursday for a few minutes…rats.
my knee is feeling a lot better, however i do feel sharp pains occasionally that seem situated underneath my knee cap. Swelling has gone down a lot, but not totally gone yet. i think i might’ve aggrevated the injury a bit today by trying to walk normally and hitting some balls at the range – dOh!
met up at Mariner’s Point driving range for some ball hitting (boy, it was crowded tonight!) and then decided to have dinner tonight at Tres Amigos in San Mateo..yum! it’s one of the few mexican restaurants i like going to.
Cheap and good food is always good (3 entrees cost ~$24 and can over-stuff 3 adults). We did family style tonight and ordered chorizos con huevos, chicken fajitas and nachos. Boy were our tummies full! Headed over to Peet’s for some after-dinner coffee (although I didn’t have any) and then parted our separate ways…
since my knee consumed most of my thoughts (and blogs) lately, i forgot to add that I turned down the offer last friday. it was a hard decision, and I don’t believe there was a right or wrong choice. it’s a matter of preference - what do I want to do? i’ve made my choice and time to move on. i can’t help but wonder sometimes what it would’ve been like had I accepted, but it’s not something I’ll dwell upon.
I was scanning through On-Demand’s latest music section last night and came across Linkin Park’s “Leave Out All The Rest”
They’re still one of my favorite bands…
‘When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I’ve done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed
And don’t resent me
And when you’re feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest’
so my last post was exceptionally depressing…i was close to droppin’ tears while writing it
well, after seeing the ortho, good news is that i just “over ran” and no surgery is needed. R.I.C.E and stretching should do the trick and things should be fine within 2-3 weeks. When the doc was pushing and pulling my legs, a surprised look came across his face for a second that got me super worried – “your muscles are so tight… it’s like someone with cerebal palsy!” – WTF?!
me: what? !? !
doc: a lean, young woman, like yourself, is usually as flexible a person can get… and your quads and hamstrings are just so tight. it’s like an old woman!
boy, that hurt. from his explanation, my quads and hamstrings tightened up a lot during my long run…and because i ran through the pain, the shortened muscles caused more exertion and force inside my knees, thus my knee problems.
i still dared to ask…can i run the marathon next weekend? quick reply, “no”.
bummer, but i was elated as hell knowing my knee will be OK without surgery.
so now i’m chillin’ cause i have to. it was an incredibly beautiful day today…and i was stuck indoors. being sedentary on a gorgeous day aint my thang, but at least i’ll be able to walk normally and run again in a few weeks (hopefully)
with being at home all day, at least i got some organizing/cleaning done, read up some more on Java and finally watch the movie White Chicks – that was hilarious!
randomness: @ the docs office, i learned i dropped ~7 lbs this week… i’m down to 100, pretty crazy…and the circumfrence of my thighs (measured above the knee) is ~6″. hmmm, when i read this post years from now i wonder how much those numbers will change
