I am actually looking into the GSX also. I recently met one of my good friends Girlfriend's she told me that she started on a 600 and I was like: well, I guess it's ok for me to do it also. Usually, there is a highway patrol program that is a few weeks long that teaches you how to ride even if you have NEVER ridden before. I really like the the Honda CBR 600, the 09' has ABS as an option so that's pretty safe but, the GSX has the power selector that will use much less power on the lower settings. This would also help if where you live gets foggy and the ground is wet. It's a lot easier than people think. You will probably crash... Everyone I have ever known that has had a motorcycle has had atleast a drop. I have ridden an 80cc scooter for awhile and I slipped out on some spilled oil. Make sure you have the proper protection and do not take risks... it's fun to go fast and all that but, it's not worth it... just be careful and drive like an old lady or something!
